Alternative App for the Tech Savvy

When I first heard about GivEnergy going into administration, I like many people I’m sure thought the worst and wondered how will I continue to control my Solar, battery and inverter system. However, being fairly Tech Savvy I looked to YouTube for an answer and found the perfect solution for me and now thanks to a very kind contributor I have my setup configured to use Home Assistant to control every aspect. It was dead easy to follow the step by step instructions presented by Talk To The Geek. So I now have a quick and very responsive way to monitor and control my system. I would recommend looking at his post on YouTube. It may well work for you to.

Can you please provide some links or details to how you accomplished it?

I have the GivTCP HACS installed, and it WAS working, but it went completely dead when they changed to subscription, and now the HACS integration cannot find any inverters or batteries, so all of my GivEnergy integrated Home Assistant automations are dead in the water.

So now I have the new app, which has text so small I cannot actually read it, and I no longer have any graphs or trends, even on my home network…unless I pay the price of a video streaming service just to see what I was sold as “included” with the system.

So now I have no way of even knowing if my batteries are adequate, or my panels need cleaning, etc, etc, … this is NOT OK.

…to anyone who has not yet spent their hard earned money on GivEnergy…read all of this before you decide.

I setup my system using these instructions and I still have complete control of it both locally and remotely. I have also added an Automation to control charging of my battery overnight depending on the solar forecast. Anyway, here is the link:

I am not tech savvy. Luckily, I have a friend who is. I bought the HA Green and started from scratch just before the portal became paid for. So far, so good controlling the AIO locally. Which has probably put the mockers on it.
If it’s any help to you I asked my friend how we got HA to find my inverter. Of course, we did it before they pulled the portal cloud access.
He said “when we installed mosquito and GivTCP on your HACS, GivTCP scanned and found them automatically. The first thing I would try is uninstalling GivTCP then reinstalling it to see if it initiates a scan and finds the IP addresses.” Maybe you tried starting again already.
I actually “uninstalled” the HA green (unplugged it for a couple of days) and started all over again adding Mosquitto and GivTCP. That is on a Windows laptop. I also wouldn’t be able to do anything on a phone screen, far too small and I don’t own a phone anyway. Followed STTG video and other than I didn’t have add-ons (might have had to find ‘integrations’ instead but can’t remember now.
I managed to set it all up to be able to do what I could on the portal cloud. Plus, GivTCP has a calibrate button that I couldn’t find on the portal cloud. It took a while to get all the gauges on one screen, on the “layout” option I swiped it sideways to make it 3 instead of 12. And I pretty much gave up trying to get the red/amber and green bits, left most of them blue. Changed the names of the gauges to what made more sense to me.


I haven’t worked out what GivTCP Power Import is yet!

Set up a different dashboard for timeslots and settings.

I found it was easier to set up that page and do the gauges when I had a bit of time. Most important bit is setting the charge rates, toggling the eco mode on and adding the time slots. I haven’t bothered with remote access as expect I’d need a phone and not got around to doing the “flowchart” think STTG calls it.

This is what I have setup for my installation using Home Assistant running 24/7 on a Raspberry Pi 5 with 4Gb of RAM, installed in Argon ONE V3 M.2 NVME case and a 1Gb M.2 RAM chip (SD cards are not suitable for running HA permanently, because they wear out too quickly).

My Solar System consists of One 5kW Gen 3 hybrid inverter, Two 9.5 kWh Gen 3 batteries, 17 solar panels in an East (8 panels) and South (9 panels) configuration.

Following the excellent STTG YouTube tutorial will give you basic control back without a subscription. However, you will have to purchase a few items in order to set this up, but this is a one-off cost.

I got it working on a Synolgy NAS as that’s already ON 24/7. Not as easy as a stand-alone computer of any flavour, as a little more work instead of all done for you. I now have two web pages, for current and all-time energy, plus another which is the inbuilt Energy page and shows the flows between all items.

That is just what I want. My home assistant set up seems to have failed because of the 8899 port not being accessible. Can you help with advice on that?

Hello I have bought a Home Assistant Green and while it shows some data there is an issue that seems to indicate that port 8899 is closed and can’t be re-opened. I am not super tech savvy and would love some help with getting off the GivEnergy app and use HOme assistant properly

I followed the instructions given by Speak To The Geek (STTG) on YouTube, I already had a Raspberry Pi sitting around gathering dust, so it was pretty easy to setup following his instructions. I have since then improved on my setup following another of his videos.
Have you tried following his advice, it might work just the same on the ha green as it does on a Raspberry Pi.
You will definitely have to install MQTT and GivTCP to see your inverters registers, which is how you will control and monitor your inverter, solar and battery.

Not a HA Green user but a web search says…

Port 8899 is not typically used by Home Assistant Green, and if it’s blocked, it may be due to your network settings or firewall configurations. Ensure that your router allows traffic on the necessary ports for Home Assistant, primarily port 8123 for web access.
i.e. you may not need it.

I found that stopping all three [HA, MQTT, givTCP] containers (where they ‘live’ in a NAS), and then restarting them (I do not know if the order of starting matters) solved some early communication problems. How you do this on HA Green I know not, but there will be a support community for HA Green, which may provide some guidance.
