Just wanted to ask other HV inverter owners if they’re having any issues with the EPS backup on the HV inverter. I’ve had the HV system installed for a few months we but hadn’t wired the EPS in as I had some concerns around the inverter and wanted to ensure it was running correctly before using it as a backup power supply.
My installer came back and wired this in a couple of weeks ago and now, intermittently, I lose power on the EPS circuit for about thirty seconds and then it comes back again (anything not on the EPS circuit remains powered). My installer said this could be because the EPS is being overloaded and forcing the inverter to trip, however looking at logs and so forth shows when this occurs the load is light with no spikes (under 1kW house load and the inverter can output 10kW). Also, the logs don’t show anything untoward in terms of inverter errors and so forth.
One thing I also noticed was when I did an update for the WiFi dongle a couple of days ago, it needed to restart the inverter which caused the EPS circuit to drop out. So I’m assuming that this is either and inverter fault or a wiring fault (but can’t see why a wiring fault would allow the EPS circuit to work at all).
I’m trying to get Givenergy to look into this but have left several messages and so forth with thier support team but yet to have any actual technical correspondence from them, so just reaching out to you guys to see if anyone has had a similar experience. I’m thinking of just taking the EPS wiring back out of play as its not doing the variety of electronics I’ve got running any good with the sporadic power outages.
there is a setting on the inverter for how quickly it switches over the EPS circuits in the event of a power loss. The default might be 30 seconds so it could be that you’re getting a grid supply interruption which is causing the EPS to flicker on and off?
The data in the givenergy portal is not detailed enough to see this, you’d need home assistant to see it.
First thing I’d suggest is to get the EPS delay changed to zero. Givenergy or I think your installer can do this.
And yes if you can eliminate the EPS load as the cause, worth doing that to confirm thats not the issue. Was the EPS wired with an inverter/grid changeover switch?
Apologies for the delay in response, the alert email went to junk.
I’ll see what I can find about the EPS switchover, I’m using Home assistant but as I’ve detailed in other messages, the HV inverters are difficult to interrogate using REST, not sure what other method I could use to find out how this delay is set? I’ll try and speak to Givenergy although I left them a message last week and I’ve yet to have anyone come back to me.
I’m pretty sure it wasn’t an EPS overload although all signs would suggest that it was, it’s just impossible to get any information from the logs to say what has occurred. I’m hoping Givenergy will be able to delve a bit deeper when they finally look at my case. My main concern is the drop out when the inverter restarted due to the dongle upgrade, I’m pretty sure the EPS circuit shouldn’t lose power completely when the inverter goes off?
The EPS does have a switch, I could try switching it off but I’m just worried if I turn it off I might lose power to the majority of the house and not get it back!
Other thing to bear in mind are if you’ve set a power limit (such as discharge power to 500W) it will honour that value when in EPS - and trip if it goes over it.
Not sure about Pause mode but that would be something to look at.
It wasnt HV but someone else recently had EPS keep tripping out and it turned out to be a home automation limiting the inverter power & then they had a powercut, so anything over 300W (or whatever it was set to) tripped.
On my Low Voltage inverters the EPS changeover delay isn’t something that is exposed in Home Assistant. It’s a hidden installer/GivEnergy setting, and the only way I have ever seen what it is set to is when it’s changed and then the record of the change appears in the givenergy portal log. You could try searching the log, it might have a record of what it was set to when the inverter was commissioned.
Thanks very much for response. Power limits seem fine and set to max (or near enough, about 9.5kW) but I’ll check and make sure that there aren’t automations fiddling with this.
