We’ve just had solar panels and a battery recently installed so this is all still very new to us.
We can’t keep the setting on Eco mode. It continually disables itself. Why is that? Nothing else is set up yet. Is there a reason that it keeps taking itself off Eco mode?
Eco is the default. If you haven’t instructed the system to charge or discard, the Eco should look after your system to minimise use of the grid.
Please check the following which may ‘take over’ your charging slots…
On the GE dashboard, have you added the Smart Tariff (beta) card?
Its description states:
‘Displays an overview of your energy market pricing and control your day ahead charging windows’
Have you enrolled on Giveback (The £ sign in the Dashboard choices.)
Are you on the Intelligent Octopus Flux tariff?
This tariff will take over all the charging slots.
Check in your GE Account settings/Manage Account Security.
Look in ‘Manage API tokens’. You may have handled over your system to a 3rd party.
Are you using Axel?
After checking, tell us which tariff you are on and give an idea of your system, type of inverter and battery sizes + anything else you think may be relevant.
Please also attach a screenshot of your Power Graph so that we can see how your system is behaving over the day.
We are in the same position. If I enable Eco Mode it disables itself in minutes with my user name and Api Inverter Settings.! I have reset the system, switched off automation and tried everything. The most annoying part is that it exports excess energy even if the battery is nearly empty!
How long have you had the system? Also, what battery do you have?
We only had ours installed on Thursday last week so we are still getting to grips with it and haven’t yet sorted out changing tariffs as we are still waiting for some documentation from our installers. It means that our battery doesn’t get changed from our solar panels unless we change it back to Eco mode, which we have to do frequently throughout the day (we don’t want to charge it from the grid yet as it’s too expensive until will change tariffs).
We have the givenergy 3.4kwh life po4 high voltage stackable battery and we are aware this is a relatively new product so wondered if it was because of this.
it sounds like you need to get your installer to come back and ensure it has been setup properly for you
You should be able to turn Eco mode on and it stays on all the time. Only if you have an automation accidentally setup as @Rbor mentions above should it turn off.
Eco mode will charge the battery from solar, and discharge it to meet home demand so for most people its what you leave on all the time.
Thank you for your replies,
I was away yesterday but am now back home.
I set the system with our Octopus tariff (GO) and wanted to charge the battery during the night. I was unable to make the charging slots work. The setting was seemingly ignored. From the beginning of the year an automation based on the Go tariff did charge the battery at night but only by about 25%.
Winter Protection was enabled from setup and kicked in a few times.
It has taken some time to work out that Eco mode was continually being switched off.
I then disabled the automation, deleted the tariff information, reset the settings to default.
The Eco mode was still switched off.
I have now removed Octopus’s authoirity to make changes and Eco mode has been on for about half an hour!
Thanks for the help an suggestions. I will keep you informed as to how long this lasts.
You say you “set the system with our octopus go tariff” - where?
I’m assuming you configured Octopus go as your tariff in the GivEnergy portal. Did you use the tariff card or the ‘smart tariff (beta)’ card?
The former as far as I know only converts your import/export information in the portal to the correct price so you can see something that compares to what you will get on your Octopus bill. It doesn’t do any automatic charging.
The latter is GivEnergy’s automation for smart charging that should charge your battery in the cheap periods and leave it on Eco during the day. I don’t have any personal experience of using this, and it is still in Beta so may not be 100% perfect yet.
Alternatively with a tariff like Go which is quite simple you can just manually program the charge and discharge activity yourself using either the portal or the app.
