Energy Management System - EMS

Hi all.

So like many Gen1 equipment owners, I was initially excited to hear about the EMS being developed and tested by select customers.

I’d also seen a YT video by ‘James and Kate’, who visited GE last year. They mentioned the possibility of some kind of buyback scheme, but I’ve only ever seen it mentioned on their channel.

Now we have GE selling inverters at 50% off, when purchased with a low voltage battery.

Starting to think GE just want to purge all their older, less capable kit and have no incentive to actually design and produce an EMS?
Why would they, when customers with gen 1 Inverter and batteries would be ‘incentivized’ to move to the likes of the AIO.

Anybody have ANY news on the EMS, other than the info shared by George Rawding in the live Q&A back in August 2023?

Kr,

Stuart.

Hi Stuart
We have a Beta EMS on trial and can say that it has been faultless in the 10 months that we have had it.
We have 2X Gen 1 AC3 Inverters and 2 X 9.5 batteries – cross charging and SOC imbalance etc has vanished since EMS install.
Don’t know when it is likely to be realised for sale, can only imagine that GE are still gathering data from the various locations and different setups that they currently have on trial.
If you really need one, try asking GE directly?
Good luck
Mark

Hi Mark,

This is great news as I have exactly the same arrangement as you. I’m still on 3015 and avoiding any updates until I get the ‘all clear’ on a newer version. As you did, I find the cross-charging and imbalances a real nuisance and have to constantly micromanage them.

I’m on Octopus Cosy and using the three cheap slots. I use the Octopus R&D Labs portal to set up the slots as the Smart Card Beta seems very unreliable for me so far. What do you use?

Cheers,
Frank

Hi Frank
We’re on Agile and currently select charge slots manually. Intend to try the Beta Smart Card, but haven’t yet!

Hey Mark.

Thank you for the encouraging news.
It really does feel like the only practical option, outside of being forced to ripout a 2 year old system.

I’d quite happily get a gen 3 3.6 inverter, and a newer gen 3 9.5kwh battery to go with a prospective EMS solution.

At present though it’s just the single gen 1 inverter and battery as described.

Frustrating obviously, given no vat on storage, and now the 50% inverter cost reduction!

Still, if it’s going to take as long as the solar diverter, I dare not risk getting new kit ordered just yet.

Kr,

Stuart

Do you guys have / are thinking about running “Home Assistant” ?

I am running “Predbat” within it and this is now controlling all my import / export ( and now also the free energy slots we get !! )

The predbat talks to Octopus energy and looks at your tarriff and then does the magic. ( and your in full control )

Not currently running HA, started using it some time ago but not being very techy had a few glitches found it too time consuming for me to sort so it’s temporary abandoned for me!!
Not sure if you can run ‘Predbat’ with the EMS anyway? Are you?

The Givenergy ( GIVTCP ) module for Home Assistant can add multiple inverters, I don’t have an EMS myself as I only have a single inverter.

But as it’s all free - i’d brush up on youtube and see how Home Assistant can be configured.

Thanks for your encouragement.
I was using GivTcp with HA until the EMS was installed. It’s the EMS that can’t handle GivTcp or visa versa.
I think also Prebat isn’t an option currently with the EMS.
Must admit too that the EMS has been so good I’m very reluctant to upset it!
Thanks again
Mark

I have a similar system - 2 AC3’s with a 9.5 and two 5.2’s. Real problems with cross charging etc, escallated to GE who suggested HA with the balancing software as the EMS wasn’t ready and the HA worked well.
GE then offered me a beta EMS unit and it has been in place since spring 2024 and has been working really well without any issues.
I was told to remove the HA as it can conflict with the EMS - I suppose they are both trying to do the same/similar thing. I think there might have been something mentioned about modbus getting overloaded.
No idea when GE might offer the EMS as a production release for wider use.

Thanks Jon and All.

As stated, I don’t have multiple inverters YET, but I’d rather wait for a official EMS product, rather than tinkering with Home Assistant.

A tad frightened about buying additional kit, and then having to devote time to getting it working. Money isn’t particularity the biggest concern, but time is unfortunately.

I could ‘simply’ rip out what I have and go for an AIO, but it seems that I could achieve the nearly the same (or more) with an EMS and additional Inverters and battery, and have some redundancy as opposed to a single point of failure to boot.

I did email tech support, but wasn’t hopefully in getting an answer, especially with the nature of my current setup.

Thanks all :+1:

I think realistically the roll out of the mainstream EMS is taking far too long, there are a lot of unhappy people that have been in contact with me asking about progress of the EMS (I’ve been very lucky to have one). I think people feel that GE are dragging their heels with it because of the commercial viability. But when so many were promised the EMS back in 2022, it’s getting a bit late now. I’d love to actually hear what the hold up is and the reasons for the slowness to push it through from the top!

Absolutely.

I’m ‘fortunate’ in that I’d not invested in multiple inverters, but if I feel forced to rip out and start from scratch, then I’d certainly look at other options from alternative manufacturers.

I’m 26 months into ownership, and between the SoC gremlins and other issues, it wouldn’t take a great deal for me to become a customer elsewhere…

So I reached out to GE support and got this:

“The EMS first iteration which is for AC coupleds specifically is due to be released in Q1 of 2025 if all goes to plan. The development of the EMS for Hybrids is still on going”

So I guess for hybrid users it’s a case of not holding your breath I guess lol

I asked the question this time last year and was told it was expected in Q2 2024!
Maybe AC coupled users shouldn’t hold their breath either!
