So I had a new smart meter installed last week. Went to charge my EV overnight as normal and it didnt charge. Not changed any settings on the EV. The charge unit is on (it’s a GivEnergy one) and the lights change as expected when plugged into car but twice, nothing has happened overnight. Any thoughts please? Please note, Im bot super technically minded so keep it simple! Thanks!
What often happens with meter changes is that the CT wich controls the EVC gets moved or disconnected. The CT is a little clamp that goes around the cable supplying power to the EVC. It is connected to the EVC so have a look in your meter box and if you can’t seen anything amiss post some photos here.
You said the problem came after a meter change so you need to go to the meter house. Your looking for the little meter and…
It’s on wire 4 which looke like the live. And it’s also pointing the right way. But it doesn’t look like it’s tight to the wire. Can you check it it has been clipped closed properly. Look how mine sits snuggly on the cable. If it’s not clipped closed, it won’t work.
OK. That’s the problem. It isn’t closed. You have to have both sides of the ferrite core touching. It looks like it’s going to be difficult to get it to shut there. So it depends on how you are using the EVC. If it’s not for anything to tricky like charging off excess PV, then you could move the CT to the right. I’m guessing the big brown wire to the right is going to the EVC. You could try moving the CT clamp to that wire. Make sure you keep it exactly the same way round i.e. facing the EVC with the black on the right. Try this and if the EVC works, you’ll know that was the fault.
Also your low tech solution to the LED flashing made me smile. Can’t you turn the LEDs off in the Givenergy App? That way you can have them on or off as you need without needing to go to the EVC. Finally don’t forget to take a photo of the sticker on the side of the charger that has a QR code on it. Or write the code down on a piece of paper and don’t lose it! A lot people find this fades over time, and without the code on it you will be completely stuck if you ever need to reset your EVC software.
Ive had a look at this.
I must have always been in this position because the wires to it wont stretch to reach the brown wire, which us the same diameter so not sure it makes a difference? Only using EVC off the grid overnight at the moment.
Currently regretting having the smart meter uograded!!
Ha ha, yes, I can turn them off completely but then I cant see if green lights are flashing when car plugged in. The central LED is just so bright!
Bit concerned, no QR code, no sticker, have founf the installation instruction manual left by installer but no QR code anywhere to be seen… been trying to contact installer and so far no reply… Ive taken off the front lower cover but nothing in there. Could it be elsewhere? Can I open the unit up further?
Vicky
PS I appreciate your time!
The smart meter upgrade is good. It just looks like the “jaws” of the CT aren’t shut tight. Unless both sides of the ferrite core are touching it just won’t work. It might be clipped so it won’t fall off, but it’s not shut tight. Try rotating it and squeezing it closed. Maybe even putting something behind it to stop it from moving back when you close it?
So the installer came to help me out.
The fix was:
Go to the app’s EV section, choose settings, then chose “change EV charger WiFi”
Then it was easy from there. Asking for serial number and password which WERE on the side of the charger, just didnt see it as quite close up to a wall.
It then asks for your house wifi details.
And the fuse Ampage on the EVC fuse box.
Then is just all updated and is back working. ![]()
What I dont get is why it all disconnected just from having the power off. Would it be the same if I had a power cut??
Apparently the CT clamp is fine as it is.
Thanks for all your help!
Vicky
I’m very happy that things worked out. Well done you!
