Flat battery won't charge

Hi All

I’ve got solar with a 9.5kW battery and 5kW inverter which have been happily working since April 2024.

To try to diagnose an intermittent over-voltage issue at my newly-installed EV charger (not GivEnergy) my electrician (who also installed the battery+solar) suggested turning the battery and solar off for a few days.

I turned all the system isolators off, unfortunately I didn’t realise that the battery also had a power switch and it seems that it continued to power the inverter for a number of days before it completely drained itself to 0%.

I turned the system back on, following the correct power-up cycle but unfortunately it won’t charge the battery. I’ve tried the following:

  • Disconnecting the battery from Octopus Intelligent Flux (to enable Remote Control)
  • Setting a timed-charge slot
  • Restarting the inverter via the “Remote Control” in the portal.

Unfortunately I’ve had no luck and the battery itself keeps powering off, presumably due to its low state of charge. The inverter is showing an error state in the GivEnergy portal which I suspect is due to an open “Battery Voltage Low” event.

I tried contacting GivEnergy support (via WhatsApp) last week but had no answer. I can’t usually be home during the week and if the battery is so low that it keeps powering off I’m sceptical that they will be able to do much remotely anyway.

Do I need to call my installer back out to somehow “jump-start” the battery?

it depends on how low the battery voltage is. If it’s not totally exhausted then I believe Givenergy can remotely instruct it to charge again. If its absolutely totally flat then you will need your installer to put a jump start pack on it to charge it up a bit

You might get a faster response from your installer than givenergy support at the moment
