Giv-energy smart tarrif & Eco mode

Hi all,

I just want to check I’m not missing anything obvious, or if someone can help point me in the right direction.

I’ve recently changed my tarrif back to Octopus Cosy and have 3 cheap periods of electricity during a 24hr period.

The new automation fuctionality on the Smart tarrif widget on the Giv-energy dashboard looked perfect for controlling my batteries charge and discharge.

And in fact this works perfectly, the battery charges in the cheap periods and discharges when I’ve set it to.

However after each charge or discharge cycle the battery does nothing, I assume because the system does not turn Eco mode back on.

I’ve searched everywhere I can think to look to see if I’ve missed a setting, but can’t see anything. Am I right in thinking that this automation in the Giv-energy portal is pretty much useless if it doesn’t automatically turn Eco mode on so that my house starts actually using the charge it’s put into my battery?

Thanks all,

Hi, I would check the GE app.

Click on the cog top right, see if you have this setting turned on?

I think your problem is the discharge periods. The older inverters/BMS don’t automatically switch to Eco mode after a forced discharge, you have to do this manually.

I suspect the smart tariff widget isn’t doing this for you.

Can you remove the discharge periods and just leave the widget controlling your charge periods?

If not you’ll probably have to look at another automation solution

Interestingly I updated the firmware on my inverter to the latest version and it all seems to work now.

The battery charges or discharged as I’ve set and returns to eco mode in between.
