Currently I have a first gen 3.6 kw hybrid inverter, with a 8kw 1st gen battery and I added a second 9.6kw battery recently.
Now I’m considering getting a heatpump in the near future so would like to fit a bigger array / upgrade the system, and I have another roof available on which I can fit a new larger array.
Given that I’ve just paid out good money for an additional battery for it a few months ago I’d rather not jump away from GE just yet. ?
I thought I’d be OK to just add more panels and overspec the arrays but after some research it seems the gen 1 inverter is limited to 11 volts max solar input, and there’s hardly any new panels on the market now that have the voltage that low, so that’s not really a viable option.
However the gen 3 inverter has 15v inputs and the opportunity therefore for an over-specced array, and given the recent issues with GE gen3 inverters look to be available at a decent price.
So here’s the question - If I go and buy a gen 3 model will my installer actually be able to commission it given the current issues with GE ? - or am I just wasting my money ?
I also suspect this may be the case, no doubt my installer will be able to advise, however a google search still shows GE equipment for sale to the trade by several outlets so ???
BTW, just re-read my original post and I put volts where I should have put amps ! Doh !
I had an order for a 2nd All In One unit ongoing but when the news broke, I cancelled it. Thankfully I hadn’t paid anything, but yes, check with your installer. I believe the entire team who did the commissioning were laid off. Even so, no installer is going to sell you something they can’t maintain - the warranty liability falls on them first, GE second…
Yes, I suspect you are probably correct, I’m just really hacked off that I bought that second GE battery a couple of weeks before the news broke.
I suppose there’s still a remote chance they will be bought out but we’ll have to wait & see I suppose.
If no GE kit can be commissioned from now on then that basically means all the stuff at the wholesalers and any used equipment is scrap value only.
I’ll be contacting my installer for suggestions re. upgrading my system in a few weeks once I’ve had some building work done, I don’t know if it’s going to be possible or practical to run another system alongside the GE one I have at the moment, but I doubt it.
Suspect I’ll have to scrap it all off in favour of another manufacturer if I want to upgrade
