Inverter Locked

I had an inverter connected to Octopus using their Intelligent Flux tariff. They charged the battery to full then never discharged it over a few days. Looking on the GivEnergy app it looked like there was some settings already setup on the battery charge/discharge schedule which could be interfering. I disconnected the battery from Octopus however the GivEnergy app still says that it is connected and I cannot change any of the settings. It has been like this for a week now. After calling Octopus they have said that it is definitely disconnected their end - is there any way to update or sever the link from GivEnergy’s end?

its up to octopus as to when they charge and discharge the battery on Octopus Intelligent Flux, so what you experienced may not be unusual

to completely sever Octopus controlling your inverter, go into account settings in the givenergy portal, security and delete any API keys that Octopus has created

this will stop Octopus controlling your inverter. Whether this removes the remote lock, I don’t know, this is something new

This screenshot is from the cloud account stating it is locked by Octopus. It stated on their website that any settings saved prior to adding to Octopus could cause issues. I assume that that is what has happened here so just need the lock to be lifted. It has been Octopus’ end just need it from GivEnergy’s end.

Gosh Tom, whereabouts in the GivEnergy cloud portal do you see this message? The system I am looking at is on the IOG tariff but nowhere does it say so. Hitherto I understood that once you go through the selection of the Octopus smart tariff and put in something called an API key absolute control passes to Octopus from their end, to the extent that anything you try and adjust at the GivEnergy end gets overwritten - even without telling you that,

This is under the My Inverter > Settings. All the options state the same.

Interesting. Since I am due to migrate to the Intelligent Octopus Flux tariff in a couple of weeks. A bit worrying that there might be a glitch.

This is what my Inverter Settings screen looks like, as if I have selected Eco mode and as if that is in force. And yet the electricity supply for the property is definitely on the smart Intelligent Octopus Go tariff, and visibly behaves like it eg when an EV is connected up to charge. Remote control commands appear as if by magic.

Octopus Intelligent Flux and Octopus Intelligent Go are quite different tariffs and work quite differently.

OIF you hand control of your inverter over to Octopus and they will charge and discharge it as they want to. The upside is you get a good export rate, so in the summer when you are generating lots of solar it’s probably the best tariff to be on. In the winter with little solar it’s not so competitive.

When you go onto OIF you create an API key for Octopus to control your inverter and as @Tom96 has shown, Octopus lock your ability to change the inverter settings.
There does seem to be problems with people leaving Octopus whereby the remote control lock still remains in place.

Octopus Intelligent Go has nothing to do with your inverter. Octopus control your car charging to charge overnight and when grid supply is high. What you are probably seeing is the portal smart tariff card which uses the Octopus data to control when your battery charges at cheap rate on OIG, but there is no forced discharge, and you can overwrite the commands and control the inverter as you want to still

Aha, with you, that makes things much clearer. I had not appreciated that IOF and IOG are very different types of smart tariff, and that it is only IOF which exerts over-riding external control over the inverter/battery. Thank you everyone.

Hi, another person here that was on Intelligent Octopus Flux and has tried to switch to standard Flux to give us a bit more control for the winter months. We checked tariff nearly two weeks ago. Our inverter is still locked by Octopus but that could be partly my fault as I removed the API Key that allowed them to control it, however, in my defence, they said that they had completely removed it from their system so it was a last resort on my part to try and regain control.

So far I have placed numerous calls into Octopus and about ten into GivEnergy trying to get this fixed. I have tickets raised by email and yesterday spoke to someone trying to escalate the issue for about the third time and raised a complaint. 24 hours later, it is still locked and I’ve still not had an email or a call!

Don’t migrate to Intelligent Octopus Flux at this time of year. You’re better off being on normal Flux or even a standard tariff with Outgoing Octopus as you’ll have more control over when your battery charges and discharges while there isn’t a great deal of sun.

Why not?

How much better off, and how do you know?

Until when?

Not switching to IOF ā€œat this time of yearā€, adopting IOF as my year round tariff. Not planning to flip flop between different tariffs to chase a few pennies as the seasons change. IOF is the best all round tariff for a low energy user with a smart battery. Isn’t it?

We’re a fairly low energy household but both work from home so I’d say we use on average about 8kWh a day. On IOG we got to the point a couple of weeks ago where we were barely making a profit. I could see in the short term that we were going to be back to the point where we were paying money for our electricity. Not being able to utilise Eco Mode for instance, to use the cheaper electricity you’ve got in your battery from an overnight tariff is where I think switching is the better option.

I have posted similar on the other (non-beta) community [how long is GE going to keep both going, it’s very confusing!]

I had several days last week of pausing my battery which was very irritating. On checking that ā€˜Octopus is controlling your battery’ message was there. I had no API keys I can remove and Octopus assure me they are not controlling it. However, on looking into the logs I did notice one odd entry - purportedly by me - to change the minSOC to 25% … not something I ever do, but something Octopus would do so I’m suspicious.

I too have tried many times to contact GE - it’s becoming impossible again - very sad.

Fortunately over the weekend I didn’t have any issues … and tonight none either … so fingers crossed! (Banner is still there though!)

On when to use IOF … for me I switch when I start needing to import more than I export … in summer I export a lot, in winter opposite… so changeover is somewhere in spring/autumn. BUT we really do need to be able to turn on and turn off outside control!

Any update from GivEnergy at all? I’ve had no response on my ticket or from any admins on here… would be good to get this sorted as it’s definitely in GEs court now and not octopus.

Hi Geoffrey, been through this and there are no API keys and no evidence of Octopus still connected to the account. I am assuming that they have left the account but GivEnergy is still reading something is there and needs refreshing from technical support. I raised a ticket 8 days ago but yet to be actioned - any chance you could help shift this along please?

@Tom96 I was wrong, Octopus don’t use an API key, they use an OAuth token to gain access to your account.

If setup it should still be in the same account settings/security section of the portal, in a different section

I have heard of other people reporting similar problems leaving IOF, the account lock doesn’t get removed, and might not even show up in the above screen
Only way to resolve this is GivEnergy support to delete the access.

I don’t work for GivEnergy so have no ability to pull strings. Can only suggest keep chasing technical support.

Sorry

I’ve also fallen into this trap, did anyone resolve it?

Yes this was resolved for me. The issue was the ticket to get the ownership transferred was stuck. Calling and emailing didn’t do anything - only speaking to the mods on here helped. When you email their support it just raises a new ticket each time… Was a nightmare. Maybe try messaging TheDragon_Giv - he works at GivEnergy and resolved it for me.

Even worse the Intelligent Go wants to know everything about my tesla, speed, location etc, so I can’t connect that either. I think I might go back to Agile.
