New way to get paid for your home battery (Axle Energy)

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently come across a company called Axle Energy and wanted to share what they’re doing because it’s a pretty sweet deal if you have a home battery setup.

What is it? Basically, they run a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). They connect to your home battery and automatically manage it to help balance the National Grid. It’s all software-based, so no new hardware is needed.

How it works: They have two main modes:

  1. Fully Optimised: Their AI takes over the scheduling. It looks at your specific energy tariff (works great with Octopus Agile/Flux), your solar forecast, and your usage patterns to charge your battery when prices are lowest and export when they are highest.
  2. Events Only: If you prefer to manage your own battery day-to-day, you can pick this. They’ll only step in during “Grid Events” (periods of high stress on the network) to export power.

The Benefits:

  • Guaranteed Cash: They are currently offering a guaranteed minimum of £10/month just for being connected.
  • High Event Pay: During grid events, they pay £1.00 per kWh exported, which is way higher than standard export tariffs.
  • Automation: It’s “set and forget.” You don’t have to manually chase the best export times; the AI does it for you.
  • Compatibility: It works alongside your existing energy supplier and any FIT (Feed-in Tariff) payments you already get.

It’s currently in Beta, so it’s a great time to jump in while they are offering those guaranteed monthly minimums.

If you want to check if your battery is compatible and get signed up, you can use my referral link here: :backhand_index_pointing_right: Axle Grid Services | Get Paid to Support the Grid

Curious to hear if anyone else here is already using them and how much you’ve managed to make so far!

Yes and here’s my code

There are a number of GivEnergy users, myself included, in the Axle beta service.

Note that the beta was to the end of March and we don’t know yet what the payment rates will be after the beta. There’s due to be an email sent tomorrow (Friday 27th March). Likely the rates will drop, but we shall see.

I’ve had two months where I didn’t achieve the £10 minimum amount so got topped up to £10, and received £12 in the other month.
We all have a referral code, I can share mine if people would like to use it, or recognise Paul (The Dragon) for all the great support he continues to give (much in his free time).

One thing to be aware of, it is not entirely clear whether Axle is compatible with some of the Octopus smart tariffs, in particular IOG, IOF and Snug all have a clause that say you can’t join any other Demand Flexibility Service provider. I’ve not heard of anyone being asked to choose between their existing tariff with Octopus Octopoints or Axle, but it is something to be potentially aware of.
Other tariffs not affected, only those with smart charging activities.

Yes, I joined late last year and it’s been quite an earner compared to the old dfs or octopus saving sessions.

I’ve not shared my code as there are more deserving

11 months into my 2nd year and I’m £1,250 pounds of export, saving sessions, free electricity and Axle VPP, (my 1st year totaled image )

Yep, just got their email. Good news is they will continue the beta.

"While we’re wrapping up the initial phase, the program will operate as an ongoing beta while we continue to refine and expand the experience. Your experience will not change, and we are still working hard on improving our product.

Going forward, you will still earn:

  • £1/kWh export during events
  • £10/month minimum earnings guarantee"

yes good news, I thought the beta would be ending and we’d get a lesser offer

its much better than Octopus DFS that’s for sure

Just out of interest how did you pay the tax due on that? Self assessment?

Also you are not allowed to do saving sessions and Axle together, you are only allowed to join 1 scheme. Though I have no idea how they would track you…
