Replacing 5m Tethered Cable on GivEnergy EV Charger with 10m – Is It Possible?

Hi all,

I’ve got a GivEnergy EV charger installed with a 5-meter tethered Type 2 cable, but I’m finding it a bit short for my driveway setup. I’m considering swapping it out for a 10-meter cable and was hoping someone here might have experience or advice.

A few questions:

  1. Has anyone successfully replaced the original 5m cable with a 10m one?
  2. Does the GivEnergy charger detect or care about the change in cable length?
  3. Are there any safety or compatibility concerns I should be aware of?
  4. If it’s straightforward, can anyone recommend a good 10m replacement cable? I’ve been looking at options on Mode 3 Tethered EV Charging Cables Type 1 ( J1722) and Type 2 ( IEC62196) – EV Extras but would love a specific recommendation.

The charger is installed outdoors and used daily, so I’m keen on something durable and compliant with UK standards.

Hi yah. I have the GE EVC as well, one car can reach the charger, but the second is out or reach, so I would have to swap them round which is a bit of a pain.

I have looked at getting one of these instead of extending the fixed cable and possibly ruining the warranty. What do you think?

Hi, I have the GE EV charger and my cable was too short for my needs. So I asked GE how I stood with replacing it warranty wise. They said they don’t sell a longer cable so the customer is free to install a longer cable without any warranty penalties. The only stipulation is that if the GE EV charger had to be swapped out for a new one under warranty claim then the original cable would need to be returned with the unit. So I did some research and purchased a 10 metre cable which has been installed since the summer and has not missed a beat. I killed power to the EV charger and did the job myself in 30 minutes.
