My system took itself offline 5 days ago. It will not reconnect. I have downloaded the givinstaller app and reset the external dongle. The dongle wasnt easy to reset and took a few attempts. The system still wont show any data and will not receive data from the app. I cant change the battery charging schedule for example. There is no information being sent to the app and no information being sent from the app. The PV and battery system itself runs very well. Do I need a new dongle? Do dongles suddenly decide to stop talking with anything?
Do you mean the system is not connected to the grid or the WiFi isn’t working? I suspect from the post, the latter.
Like all computers when in this situation, it is at least worth “turn it off, then turn it on again”. Follow the GE details to close down the system and disconnect from the grid and then, after waiting a while, reconnect to the grid. That may kick things back into life.
Is the wireless signal visible - try one of the free mobile phone apps to view. Mine appears around 70 dB down with a WOnnnnn label. If it isn’t there then dongle may not be OK. If it is broadcasting then it is down to the connection to router. Turn off 5GHz band (if you have it - this gets in the way of many of the cheaper 2.4 GHz devices) when trying to reconnect to router - you can turn it back on afterwards.
The WiFi doesnt work. For example , no current information is shown and I am not able to make adjustments online such as altering the time when I require the mains to charge my batteries. The wireless signal isnt visible or maybe I dont know where to look for it and almost certainly I wouldnt know whether 70dB ( decibels?) is good or bad and WOnnnn label is also something which means very little to me. I have checked my router and repeaters and it isnt possible to “switch off” 5GHz its there and stays there. On the Givinstaller app I can complete the “update dongle” section successfully but I cant complete the “Update WiFi details” section at all. I have experimented with entering different WiFi addresses because I have the router and I also have a number of repeaters with the routers address plus “EXT” for example. I have tried the universal reset but it has no effect. I have ordered a new Givenergy dongle from the internet because I reasoned that it might be worth a try rather than paying somebody £50per hour just to fiddle around and come to a similar conclusion. The next option I thought about was to obtain a dongle with an RJ45 socket on it so I can then plug the inverter straight into the router. ( I have a mark 1 inverter which doesnt have and RJ45 socket)I am a bit reluctanty to do this since the data would be there without reference to a dongle and the mark1 inverter software protocol might not like it.
Something I neglected to mention: the dongle flashes with a blue light constantly. The frequency of flashing does increase during some phase of install dongle.
I just had yet another go at the issue. This time , I’ve bought a few extra bits because I reasoned that if I asked a skilled expert to attend it would cost me quite a lot of money. I used a USB to RJ45 converter in order to plug the inverter directly into the router instead of using wifi. It didnt work. I bought a new dongle since the old one seemed to just want to flash all the time. I also remembered that I had a peculiar shaped bit of plastic with a USB symbol on it but didnt appear to do anything at all …I found that this item was ideal for inserting into the dongle to reset it. I tried the new dongle, that responded to “update dongle” but wouldnt complete " update wifi details". I reverted to the original dongle since I have details of the system on my PC and I noticed that it still showed the original dongle details. I very carefully checked thatI had been entering the correct details into the system as regards my network and password. Everything went well, the dongle stopped flashing and went to a full blue light and the system started to work ok. I remain totally ignorant as to how this issue came into being( why did the system lose contact with Givenergy)
I have resolved the problem but still not found the cause. I have re-entered my broadband router details for the nth time and everything happened exactly as the instructions and guideline describe. I have no indication at all as to what exactly cased the issue in the first instance or indeed any indication that it wont just happen again. During all this time , my fibre optic router has been flawlessly running other services. I am now using my original dongle. I did find it to be difficult to find or contact anyone at givenegy by email. I do prefer this method of communication of technical issues since I am able to explain any issue in as much detail as I can whilst reading any reply several times so that any information given by an expert “sinks in” If I were an expert, why would I need to ask an expert? So many people who I have helped in my own professional field of expertise understand this approach after I explained it to them. By the way, FAQs: they are very painful in that one has to read and understand every single one in order to discover that your own question isnt answered in FAQ. Often generally in FAQ there isnt a FAQ “what if I have discounted all the FAQs?”! I therefore conclude that FAQ is a general fob off.
