WiFi on AIO and Gateway keeps dropping

The Gateway updated to v11 fine. But I dont think you can do the dongle (using WireLessModule.bin) via USB. No instructions on it and tried plugging it in and with the USB dip switches changed but nothing happens.

It doesnt work via the installer app as I need to reset my card and in my AIO I have 2 buttons and the layout is different to the instructions. So dont want to go poking. Might just have to be a remote jobby if it can be done or if anyone has any advice for this particular unit.

The AIO wifi isnt too bad. But the gateway, which has line of site to a mesh node with the correct MAC keeps dropping every few seconds. Even me connecting directly to it via AP mode it drops off.

Can someone confirm the steps to go Ethernet as its not just plug in, dip switches and your off. I guess a reboot is needed or maybe some manual config.

Hi yah, your getting there, so I guess @TheDragon_Giv did not get back to you?

Have you looked at this?

I have all my kit hard wired, so not having these issues but still need to update the dongle and WiFi chipset.

Because I have wired network, I have put WiFi back to AP mode and not connected to my WiFi. This is needed incase the Ethernet does not work, you can then get access via the AP.

I am sure you can update the dongle via the app, now you have the firmware.

Here are a few more videos you may be interested in:-

WiFi chipset is all done. Just that dongle version 904 to update but no joy via USB yet and the app needs the button pressing (but I have 2).

Thanks for the videos. I’ll have a watch.

Morning, once you have the dongle updated then we can start looking at WiFi or Ethernet. The decision will be yours but if you can get to wired that is much better.

Good luck with the update.

Hey Dave,

I am in the same situation as @Guybrush (Intermittent drops that need a full AIO reset to sort)

Gateway Dongle FW Version - 206
AIO FW Version - 904

I’m pretty comfortable with the process of updating the firmware (Drop onto the AIO wifi, navigate to the admin page and upload the file), however the installer page doesn’t make it clear what to use:

Under Accessories there is:

  • Dongle
  • Dongle ARM Update
  • Dongle WiFI Chipset Update

When downloading these only one of the links gives the ‘eCos.img’ file mentioned in the video and when this applies in the web interface, the givenergy portal seems to suggest its still on the old version.

Do you know which is the correct 206 firmware file for the AIO?

Thanks so much!

Hi yah, they don’t make it easy. So what I have done is downloaded all of them. As it will depend on your dongle which update it can do.

I updated the chipset first on GW and AIO. (Via the video method)

Dongle ARM is the 206 one.

Dongle 206 should be for the GW and AIO also (this was done by Paul for me)
You need to download it to a usb stick. Unscrew the cover on the AIO, change the dip switch, insert the usb and it should update. Once finished put the dip switches back to what you had them. There is 2 x usb ports on the AIO, it is not the one under the plastic cover it is the one inside the main cover with 4 x screws.

I think the reason your having network issues is the FW 9xx is installed from the factory, your installer should have updated everything to the correct level 2xx.

I would say if your not confident doing it then ask GE they will do it for you. But they can not do the chipset.

This is what my installer downloaded from GE when he arrived. This was a while ago so some are already outdated.

Hi yah, any news on your progress?

So the next stages once everything has been updated.

  1. Once updated check to see if everything is working or still dropping.
  2. You need to reset the dongle to default (please check what system you have to do this)
  3. You may need to Restatr &/or Reset your AIO to factory settings. (This may need doing if your AIO was still in factory software)
  4. The WiFi should be back to default as well in AP mode.
  5. Go onto your Router and remove the existing AIO/GW connection.

Once you have done the above you should be on a good position to move forward.
Decide on WiFi or Ethernet is the next step.

I got the giv installer app to connect. It says it sent the update. Secured the WiFi and says all done. But the portal still shows version 904.

And the thought of resetting the unit to factory scares me.

It’s working well enough. Occasionally drops off but when it does the cloud still updates. Which is odd.

I ended up installing a mini wifi router in the house closer to the AIO and Gateway with it connected to my main home router via an ethernet cable ran through my loft. The AIO and gateway then connect to the mini router via wifi. It has been perfect ever since.

My gateway, which is the biggest problem, is 3m line of sight to the node it’s bound to. If I connect to its built in AP with my laptop it’s also flakey.

I think it’s a mix of the cheapest WiFi card you can possibly buy, inside a metal box with a lot of high voltage.

My gateway never connected for over a year until I rebooted it recently. It never caused any issues.

Hi yah, did you install the v206 dongle ARM ? If you did then you don’t need to factory reset, just a reboot, turn off the AIO, isolate it, wait 5 mins then switch it back on again.

Have a look in the GE Cloud and see when the AIO was last connected to see if the new v206 has been updated. If not send a time sync and see if that gets through.

Did the update via the phone app

Just powered down the AIO (blue button, wait, battery isolator, AC isolator).

Made tea

Powered up

Synced time

Got ready for the gym

Still 904.

I’m going to leave it for now. Thanks for all your help. I fear any more tinkering and it’s going to get grumpy with me.

See what it’s like when you get back from the gym. If it is still on 904, then the update did not work, I would try again. I think you will get drop outs until you get it to 206.

Still in 904. Tried AGAIN from GivInstaller. Went fine. It secured the AP, powered off and on and still no joy.

On the power down. I waited for 20 mins as the front lights flashed but they never stopped. So I just flicked the dc switch.

Hi yah, I am not sure why the dongle FW is not updating for you. All I can suggest is to email GE. They can do it remotely.

Hi Paul @TheDragon_Giv are you or one of your team available to help with this please?

904 is the international version of 206.

But yes it can be done manually with the 206 file

By popping it on the stick, switching the dips to USB and popping it in?

Tried that, nothing happens on the AIO. But on the gateway it instantly started flashing and doing its firmware style update thing.

If 904 is the same as 206 then thats all good.
