Gen 3 3.6kwh inverter with East West strings conflicting each other

I recently had a Givenery gen 3 3.6kwh system installed that as an east west array of around 2kwh each way along with 2 9.5 kwh givenergy batteries.

I have an issue and was wondered if anyone had noticed anything similar with a east / west split.

With both strings running they both underperform substantially and even seem to take it in turns to accept the output.
If I isolate one string the other performs far better than when the 2 are running together.

Here are some readings

There have been some issues with East/West PV generation on the Gen2 hybrid inverters that seem to be resolved with inverter firmware updates to D912-A912 I think now.

I would start by stating your Gen3 inverter firmware version, to see if any others have come across the same problem.

Thanks Simon, I have a gen 3 3.6kwh

I experimented with switching from one string to another today and as you can see it was ok with string 1 working alone but useless with both running at the same time

snapshot here from when both strings were on and all over the place

Update, I ran with east string only till 10, turned on west string and everything worked correctly till 2pm when it went into the same conflict spiral between the strings. Turned west string off and east string picked back up to expected generation within 2 minutes.

all good till 13:59 when it happened again

this went on till 14:29 when I noticed and turned string 2 off and all went back to normal

so on this graph, 10 till 11 is shading at this time of the year but after 2 you can see where it went bad

This is old factory firmware. Is there an option to update in the portal?, if not you may need to contact support. I’d do that and see if it’s any better. I don’t have a gen3, but have seen this mentioned elsewhere

Excellent mate thanks, there is and it says it will cycle the battery , ill run the battery down tomorrow and update it.
Ill report back thanks, hope it sorts the issue.

looking at it there is only one for the battery?

Yeah, that’s a different one for the batteries. Thinking about it, the inverter one may not show as it’s a x9x number that’s installed (which usually means it’s a beta version). As it’s a higher number than the newer firmware, no update may be seen as available and it needs support to manually push it. No guarantee they’ve fixed the issue mind, but a better chance :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks Matt, whats the best practice to contact them, nothing in the app or portal to report or request anything?

found a number Matt. will call them today, thanks again

Quick update, Givenergy pushed an update out version 307 so hopefully things will settle down. You guys were correct, I was still on the factory firmware. I will report back the results.

Thanks

Did you get the firmware updated… and did it fix your issue ? ( I think I have the same issue )

Hi, yes I did and it did sort the east / west issue and its a lot more stable. As ever it meant exporting the entire contents of you battery for free (unless you have export tariff sorted) and the charging back up to full at any random time including outside of cheap rates.
I am now on software version D0.307-A0.307.

I now have a new issue though which you may encounter if you have 2 batteries.
They are virtually always unbalanced and the slave battery never charges above 80%.
Givenergy said they needed to do a low level calibration of the batteries so again another uncontrolled dump of the batteries and filling back up at prime time and it as made zero difference. The situation is worse now than it was last week when they did the calibration. I rarely get the slave battery above 70%. Tried turning the slave off to balance them but not only does it seem to struggle to charge, it also struggles to discharge and then lags behind the primary battery once they are in line. Going to contact them again about it and the installer. Could the slave be faulty or is it the BMS firmware, who knows but its getting me down

it looks like I have the same setup as you then… I also have 2 x 9.5KW batteries, So I will get the firmware updated to 307 and then see what happens with the batteries.

My installation has still not been signed off yet so not on any smart tarriffs etc… and also not enough sun to fill the batteries.

I suspect once the firmware is done the batteries will condition themselves and I will see what happens.

As a matter of interest - what Energy provider and traffif are you using ?
